Commissions guidance
It’s probably not that often you commission some bespoke art. I’m here to talk you through the process about how I can capture the personality of your pet in paint.
1. Consider your budget and timescale
Prices are usually between £200 - £250, plus postage.
Prices vary because of several factors. This includes how many animals are in the portrait, how large you’d like the painting and the overall complexity of the piece. I’m here to help you figure out exactly what you want, and I’m happy to share with you what would work to your budget - including for smaller pieces.
Pet portraits take time. If you’d like to commission for a specific date, I recommend allowing for at least 6 weeks, or 2 months at Christmas. This gives plenty of time to agree on the photograph, composition, style and background. Please keep in mind that if you’d like to book a commission with a more urgent turnaround time, this may cost extra.
2. Have photographs ready
My job is to capture the life and personality of your pet in paint. To do this, it is essential that I have a good quality reference photo to work from. Here are some top-tips to capture a great photo:
Natural lighting is best. Go outside or stand by a window. Never use flash!
Stand with the sun behind you so that the best lighting is cast onto your pet
Use a good quality camera. Most smart phones these days are good enough to capture the detail I need
Be on the same level as your furry friend. Don’t take a photo while towering over them, being at their eye level is best
Remember: I work directly from your photograph. While you can submit several images, we’ll need to agree together the best photo you’d like me to work from.
3. Get in touch
Together we can discuss cost, reference images and timescales. Our discussion will also allow me to learn more about your pet so that I can capture their personality.
If you decide to commission me, I take a 50% upfront as a deposit and the rest is paid once the painting is complete.
